Nuna Stroller Cup Holder: Should You Buy it? (Honest Review)

Do you have a Nuna Stroller and find yourself in need of a cup holder? The question I hope to help you answer today is this: is the Nuna stroller cup holder worth it? Or is it better to go with a more cost-effective, universal one?

And as you may have guessed… it depends. If you keep reading, you’ll learn about some essential considerations to help you make an informed decision that’s best for you and your family.

A cup holder for moms is a must, but many strollers do not come with one. They must be purchased separately, and the prices can range from $20 to $60.

Have you ever been in a situation where you didn’t have a cup holder or stroller organizer? I have! I still have nightmares about traveling with my 14-month-old to Nashville, walking down the jet bridge, carrying her in one arm, my stroller in the other, and death-gripping my coffee to keep it from dropping.

As a mom of two, I’ve learned just how important it is to have easy-to-use drink storage that doesn’t spill.

But most strollers these days don’t come with cup holders…. It’s almost like they’re trying to get more money from us! The lack of cup holders has created an entire industry of universal cup holders. Here are just a few: The Skip Hop Universal Stroller Organizer, The Itzy Ritzy Adjustable Stroller Caddy, or The Skip Hop Universal Cup Holder. As you can see, there are plenty of options to choose from!

Some of the factors we’ll take a look at include price, stroller compatibility, cup compatibility (size and weight), why companies advise against putting hot beverages in stroller cup holders (even though this is something moms often need to do), and finally why you probably shouldn’t buy the Nuna cup holder…at least for most of their Stroller line up.

I did buy the Nuna cup holder and the cup holders I recommend in this post with my own money, however, this post contains affiliate links, which means I make a small commission at no extra cost to you. See my full disclosure here. Thank you for Supporting The Stroller Mom!

How much does the Nuna stroller cup holder cost?

Nuna has three cup holders for their strollers which all retail at $24.95 and are only available at authorized retailers. So you will not be finding Nuna products on Amazon or Buy Buy Baby. Instead, you will find Nuna products at smaller baby stores like Strolleria and Albeebaby.

If you prefer to shop Big box stores, they are available at Dillards, Pottery Barn, and Nordstrom, which often feature special collections and have sales on Nuna products like the annual Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, which takes place in July-August. Although, the cup holder is unlikely to go on sale since there is no Nordstrom-exclusive version.

If you are considering adding any Nuna products to your registry, make sure you use an option like Babylist or My Registry, which allows you to link to multiple product websites.

What cup holder is compatible with my Nuna stroller?

Like most Nuna Products, they are only compatible with other Nuna products. But to complicate it even more, I was surprised to learn that the Nuna cup holders are not universal across their line of strollers.

For example, if you have the Nuna TRVL and the Demi Grow, you will need to buy two separate cup holders. This is because the stroller frames are different sizes.

On the other hand, one of Nuna’s competitors, UppaBaby, sells one cup holder compatible with the following strollers: VISTA (2015 – 2019), VISTA V2, CRUZ, CRUZ V2, MINU, MINU V2. Instead of making you purchase separate cup holders, they include adapters for all of these strollers when you buy.

Although, one major drawback of the Uppababy universal cup holder is that in time it is more likely to slide off the frame when closing the stroller because of the way it clips onto the separate adapters. You’ll likely not experience this issue with the Nuna cup holder. So I guess there is a trade off.

Another thing to mention is that Nuna only sells cup holders for some of their Strollers! This seems a little crazy, considering this is an essential convenience. So if you have the Nuna Pepp or Nuna Tavo, you will have to look at universal options because Nuna doesn’t think you need one (or want your money?)… At least it seems that way.

What cups fit inside the official Nuna cup holder?

Nuna only gives sizing for the Nuna TRIV cup holder on their website, but I got out my tape measure and measured it for you on my Nuna TRVL (see below). Based on the weight of the other cup holders, I would guess the ones for the Nuna Mixx Cup Holder and the Nuna Demi Grow Cup holder are similar.

Bellow I put together a comparison of each cup holder. The sizing was found on the Nuna website, and I added the Uppababy cup holder for their line of comparable strollers for reference from the Uppababy website.

Cup holder comparison chart

Online Cup holder stats:

  • Nuna TRVL Cup Holder
    • WEIGHT: 0.57 lbs
    • No measurements online
  • Nuna TRIV Cup Holder
    • WEIGHT: 0.33 lbs
    • SIZE:  5.25  x 3.65 x 4.25 in
  • Nuna Demi Grow Cup Holder/Nuna MIXX Cup Holder/Nuna Mixx Next Cup Holder
    • WEIGHT: 0.57 lbs
    • No measurements online
  • UppaBaby Vista/Cruz/Minu Cup Holder
    • Weight: .20 LBS
    • SIZE:  ‎3.5 x 3.8 x 4 inches

Each of the Nuna cup holders folds with the stroller, but as many moms have experienced with the bigger Nuna strollers like with the Mixx Next, it does increase your width when going through doors and narrow spaces. This is not an issue for the TRVL since it already has a more slender frame.

Here is my Nuna TRVL with the cup holder attached. However, I recommend removing the cup holder when flying once you have to check your stroller to keep it from getting broken. No one takes care of your stroller as you do! And no one beats up strollers as much as the airlines…

So let’s talk about what you really came for… Will the Nuna cup holder fit my Stanley cup?

The answer is kind of. The Nuna cup holder only recommends drinks with a maximum weight of one measly pound.

If you had to go back to ensure you read that correctly, you are not alone. I was shocked to learn this, especially since most beverages weigh more than that. And we are not even getting to the fact that they have warnings against hot beverages (more on that in a little bit).  Here are the average weights of the most popular cups used by moms:

So unless you’re planning to only use your cup holder for sparkling water, a tall latte, or your child’s beverages, you may want to consider going with a stroller organizer instead  (unless you have the Nuna TRVL) or an option like the Skip Hop Cup Holder (which I also own only it has a 5 lb weight limit which will fit all of the above beverage sizes).

You can, of course, run the risk of putting heavier cups in the Nuna cup holder, which many do, but there’s a chance the cup holder breaks, and it probably wouldn’t be covered by warranty. It also could be very dangerous for your child if it breaks while holding a hot beverage.

So, why can’t you put hot drinks inside a stroller cup holder?

I was surprised to find that most company-manufactured cup holders (Nuna, UppaBaby, and Skip Hop alike) advise against putting hot beverages of any kind in their cup holders. So it is not just Nuna that does not want you putting a coffee cup in the cup holder.

This is likely due to the injuries that a spill could cause to moms and babies. But what other options are there? In reality, many parents are finishing their coffee when out and about with their children in the morning. Since this is not just true of the Nuna cup holder, it ultimately comes down to personal risk and liability. So, if you plan on putting hot drinks in the cup holder, ideally, you should use a coffee mug with a secure lid (like a Hydroflask or Yeti).

Final Thoughts: Is the Nuna cup holder worth it?

For most of the Nuna strollers, I recommend purchasing a stroller organizer instead of the official Nuna cup holder. Stroller organizers allow you to hold multiple cups, keys, phones, etc.

On top of that, stroller organizers aren’t as prone to spill as cup holders because they move with the bumps. Yet another reason to go with a stroller organizer.

BUT I do not recommend buying a stroller organizer if you have the Nuna TRVL. The way the hood is designed makes adding a stroller organizer very inconvenient, especially for drinks. Trust me… I tried it and spilled my husband’s coffee at a Christmas light event on my ghost white vans…not fun.

Conclusion: My recommended cup holder

Although, for my Nuna TRVL stroller, I prefer the Accmor Universal Stroller Cup Holder with Phone Holder from Amazon over the official Nuna cup holder. It can hold more weight, your phone, fits most cups, goes on easier, and is much cheaper!
