Newborn Stroller Guide: Strollers You Can Use from Birth without a Car Seat

Are you looking for a stroller that you can use from birth into toddlerhood? As a new mom, I was surprised to learn that not all strollers work from birth right out of the box. You only use strollers for a few years of your kids’ lives, and not being able to use your stroller for the first six months is crazy!

There are some that do work from birth, but it can be hard to tell which ones. That’s where this newborn stroller guide comes in! In this guide, I break down what strollers you can use right out of the box with your baby.

Keep in mind that most strollers do have an option to use from birth with a car seat or purchase extra accessories like infant inserts or bassinets, but in this post, I will focus on the strollers that you won’t need to purchase anything extra.

Want to learn more about what options you have to transport your newborn? Watch my Newborn Stroller video here, where I share everything you need to know about strollers that work from birth and why this is usually a better option than always using a car seat paired with your stroller as a travel system.

Strollers with a built-in Pramette

A pramette is a type of stroller that converts into a bassinet-style mode, allowing newborns to lie flat. It combines the functionality of a traditional bassinet stroller with the convenience of a modern stroller. The two major differences between a bassinet and a pramette are:

  1. A pramette is not sleep safe, meaning you cannot use it around your house outside of the stroller for sleep.
  2. You must still buckle in your child inside a pramette

Most pramettes start as a fully reclined, parent-facing seat that can later be adjusted into an upright, forward-facing stroller as your baby grows. They are a popular all-in-one solution for parents who want a stroller that works from birth without needing a separate bassinet.

Strollers that Include a Bassinet

Many brands sell a bassinet that can be bought separately and paired with the applicable stroller. A bassinet option is most commonly found in the full-size stroller category, but some double and travel strollers, like the Joolz Aer 2, also offer them. Something important to note: not all bassinets are approved for overnight sleep, so always check the manufacturer’s website to see if this is an important feature for you.

Currently, only a few strollers on the market come with a separate bassinet when you buy the stroller (all others will need to be bought separately). With the exception of the Bugaboo Donkey and Fox 5 when paired with a Bugaboo bassinet stand, none of the below options are approved for overnight sleep, but are great for napping while strolling and require adult supervision.

Are there other ways to make a stroller safe for Newborns?

You have five options to make your stroller work from birth, and this post focuses on the ones that don’t require you to buy anything extra for it to function properly. Here are some of your other options:

  1. Buy a stroller with a newborn-ready or full-flat recline.
  2. Purchase a compatible bassinet
  3. Purchase a compatible infant insert
  4. Use with a compatible infant car seat
  5. Buy a stroller with a pramette or an included bassinet
